Do you love WordPress? Do you want to help make WordCamp Cape Town an amazing experience for our attendees? Are you just the type of person who likes helping out? Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to sign up as a volunteer for WordCamp Cape Town.
Volunteers help manage WordCamp Cape Town, on the days of the event. You’ll work alongside the organising team to ensure that things run as smoothly as possible.
Types of tasks include managing the registration table, helping attendees find their way around the event, assisting speakers with setting up for their talks/workshops and managing the official WordCamp swag table.
These are the types of roles we’ll be looking to fulfill
Swag station – Pre-conference prep work includes setting up the official swag station. At WordCamp, work includes distributing the official swag tables to attendees who have pre registered.
Video – we always need volunteers to act as camera operators at WordCamp, ideally you have your own equipment and video recording experience. Good gig, since you can watch sessions at the same time.
Registration – Check in registered attendees and hand out nametags. Being really awesome with alphabetical order helps here.
Happiness Bar – Answer questions and help WordPress users fix problems with their sites. Must be able to show level of expertise to be selected for this gig.
Printing – Feel like donating some paper and printer ink to the cause? Print up some programs and associated materials on plain white paper from your business or home office and drop them off at the venue during the prep day. An eye for detail is helpful.
Food/Beverage – This is already taken of for the most part, but it would be helpful to have a few people keeping an eye on things.
Green Room Guards – Having a safe place for speakers and volunteers to leave their stuff while they run around is important. We need people to stay in these rooms (maybe an hour or two at a time?) to guard everyone’s stuff.
Emcees – Introduce speakers/sessions and keep things running on time. Keep an eye on the clock and give speakers a heads up when they are down to 10 and 5 minutes, and let them know when their time is up. Brevity and wit a must.
Room Runners – Work with the emcees, video people, speakers, and everyone else working in the room to keep things running smoothly. Make sure there’s water for speakers, and provide support as needed for other event staff.
Casual Runners – Unexpected things always happen at events. It’s good to have a handful of people on hand to help take care of whatever crops up.
Children’s services – we would like to have day care/creche facilities for attendees with children. Previous experience and references essential
Miscellaneous Prep – Random helping here and there that doesn’t have a category.
Volunteers will get a free ticket to attend both days of WordCamp Cape Town (which includes swag) and the after party, as well as being invited to the volunteer dinner we hold before WordCamp itself.
WordCamp Cape Town is taking place on 26 & 27 September, but you don’t have to be there for both days. Simply indicate how much time you can make available when you apply.
