A WordCamp Love Story

You never really know when cupid will strut through a door brandishing his love arrows and bow, waiting for the opportune moment to strike.

Sometimes love hits us in the face as we lock eyes with someone across a room, sometimes it happens through a series of fortunate events and sometimes it is found in the chair next to you at WordCamp.

At WordCamp 2012 Guillaume skidded into the hall, running late as usual, and threw himself into a chair next to his friend who kept a spot for him. On the other side of him was a fetching woman who he had never met. But one of the main purposes of WordCamp is to network, and so, he struck up a conversation with this lovely young lady.

By the end of the day, Guillaume and Louise were connected on Gtalk (was a thing back then), Mxit (another thing that is no longer around) as well as on email. Over the coming months, they became good friends, chatting and keeping each other company until the early hours of the morning while working. Guillaume worked on developing WordPress sites and studying while she worked on her own WordPress site for her business.

Over time Guillaume and Louise grew closer and by WordCamp 2013 they were dating, their love and passion for each other only grew with each year that passed and in 2019 we celebrate the birth of their son William (Will AI) our very own WordCamp Cape Town baby mascot!

A timeline of WordPress love events

  • Guillaume and Louis first met at WordCamp 2012
  • By WordCamp 2013 they were dating
  • By WordCamp 2014 they were engaged
  • By WordCamp 2015 they were married

  • In the year of WordCamp 2017, Guillaume and Louise bought an apartment together
  • By WordCamp 2018 they were pregnant!
  • In 2019 – Baby William says “Hello World” and will be attending his first WordCamp

You never really know what will happen at a WordCamp, so attend anyway…you may meet the love of your life, but if not, you will definitely walk away with some great swag having met awesome people and having gained knowledge that you did not previously possess.
